The members of ASA's Philadelphia Chapter are always making news. Our dedicated professionals are in constant demand as guest speakers, visiting professors, teachers, journalists, and for radio and TV interviews. And that's when they're not busy preparing appraisals, serving as expert witnesses, and providing service to their communities.

Susan M. Golashovsky, ASA on Obama's Bed

Property appraiser Susan M. Golashovsky, ASA didn't get to sleep in President Obama's antique tall post bed, which was resized and sold by Leonards New England. But she was called in to offer her professional opinion on selecting a restorer for antique beds and furniture.

"Although you may shop for affordability, this should not be the only factor in hiring a restoration expert," says Susan Golashovsky, an independent appraiser in Doylestown, Pa. "You should look for someone who is experienced in working with antiques."

Personal Property Triple-Header

Family Circle magazine, the best-selling women's magazine in America, with more than 4,000,000 subscribers, recently featured three of our own Personal Property gurus in a roundup of America's "Trusted Appraisers." And the trustworthy trio comprises Rochelle Eisenberg, ASA, Susan Golashovsky, ASA and Judith Lepow, ASA. Congrats to all!

Rochelle Eisenberg, ASA: Art & Antiques Author, Lecturer

Rochelle Eisenberg, ASA, the principal of Art Directives, Inc. in Fort Washington, PA has had a busy Fall, teaching at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and writing for the Montgomery Newspapers in addition to managing her firm of art appraisers and consultants. Rochelle, who is accredited in Antiques & Decorative Arts as well as Residential Contents, offered The Art of Becoming a Savvy Collector four Thursdays in October and November at the University of the Arts. Besides learning the determinants of value, Rochelle's students got guidance on how, what and where to buy, how to downsize, and how to sell for maximum return. Rochelle's article, Valuing Your Valuables, through Life's Changes in the Montgomery Newspapers' special Arts and Antiques section gave readers practical advice on managing their collections.

O. John Ohanian, ASA:  2010 Sinclair Award Winner!

The 2010 George D. Sinclair Professionalism Award was presented to longtime Philadelphia Chapter member, O. John Ohanian, Jr., ASA at the Chapter's May 19 meeting. The Award, which was created in 2003 by the Philadelphia Chapter, recognizes an individual -- not necessarily a Chapter member -- whose actions have enhanced the appraisal profession. The Director of Financial Valuation Services at the Colmar, PA firm of Pritchard, Bieler, Gruver & Willison, PC, John has been engaged in the valuation of closely held businesses and intangible assets since 1978. As the 2010 recipient of the Sinclair Award, John Ohanian is both honored by and does honor to the award.
